10 Safety Tips When Riding An ATV

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

More and more these days, riders of all terrain vehicles (ATVs) are becoming injured or even killed when their ATV wrecks, enforcing the need for safe operating procedures. This is especially important for teenagers who are interested in riding ATVs and are less likely to practice safe conduct while operating the vehicles. Keep in mind that ATVs are just as dangerous as cars, motorcycles, trucks, or sport utility vehicles, so only operate them using the proper techniques and procedures. Many riders neglect the fact that these vehicles have the capability to extremely injure or kill the drivers, but in the correct hands, ATVs can be a fun way to spend time in the great outdoors. Follow these ten safety tips when riding any ATV:

1.) Only drivers over the age of 16 should operate an ATV. The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends that children under the age of 16 should not operate an ATV. This is especially important, since younger children are usually injured on ATVs due to their size or inexperience with operating vehicles. Even once a child is 16 and able to operate an ATV, adult supervision should be present at all times.

2.) Always wear protective gear. Just like operating a motorcycle or bike, riding an ATV requires you use proper protective gear. ALWAYS wear a helmet. Most serious or fatal accidents occur when the rider is not wearing a helmet and falls on his or her head. Helmets may not be the most stylish accessory, but they can literally save your life. Also, since most riders operate ATVs in wooded environments, be sure to wear proper eye protection, as a rock, branch, or even a bug can fly into your eye and cause damage. Furthermore, be sure to wear boots and gloves to protect your hands and feet while operating the ATV.

3.) Take a driver’s safety course. Before you drive a car, you take a safety course, so why should driving an ATV be any different? Safety courses educate riders of the correct way to operate and ride an ATV to ensure he or she knows how to handle the vehicle. Also, safety courses will teach riders of all ages the appropriate behavior when riding an ATV, making it critical for teens and adults to attend.

4.) Only one rider per vehicle. ATVs are designed for only one rider at a time. Since you have to manipulate your weight in order to control the vehicle, two riders on a vehicle is incredibly dangerous. Also, the ATV may be unable to successfully hold the combined weight of two riders, making it less stable and more apt to roll over. Finally, having an additional rider can distract the driver from the task of properly operating the vehicle.

5.) Ride ATVs in appropriate settings. When it comes to where to ride your ATV, ensure you choose a proper setting. Avoid roads and streets, since ATVs are not designed nor intended to be driven on concrete or asphalt with larger cars and trucks. Also, avoid improper terrain that may encourage the ATV to roll over due to instability in the ground.

6.) Do not speed. ATVs are designed to go a certain speed safely. Increasing the speed–especially through certain terrains–decreases your control and the vehicle’s stability, making you more prone to have an accident.

7.) Do not operate an ATV impaired. Many adults find themselves tempted to operate an ATV while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Even over the counter or prescription medications can impair your reaction time, thinking process, and judgment, so be sure to avoid operating an ATV during this time. Just like drinking and driving, alcohol and ATV driving does not mix.

8.) Carry a communication device with you at all times. ATV operations should be sure to carry a cell phone or walkie talkie with them at all times so that they can call for help in the event of an emergency. This is especially true if you are riding alone, which is not encouraged, so that someone will be able to find you if you become injured. Whenever you plan to ride your ATV, you should either have another individual with you or notify someone of where you are going and when you plan to return.

9.) Do not attempt tricks or stunts while riding an ATV. The most injuries on ATVs occur when the vehicles are operated improperly. Take great care in riding your ATV and be sure to avoid any tricks or stunts that will encourage an accident. Furthermore, avoid improper interaction with other individuals, whether they are on an ATV or not.

10.) Use common sense. This final safety tip is by far the best. Your common sense can carry you a long way, especially involving your safety.

How To Dispose Of Your Old ATV Tires

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

When it comes time to replace your old and worn ATV tires, many riders are eager to purchase new tires, but many are unaware what to do with the old ones. Regardless where you live, throwing old tires in a body or water or natural environment is improper–and in many cases illegal–since the tires can corrupt nature. When disposing of your old ATV tires, be sure to do so in a proper and legal manner that will not negatively impact the environment for future generations.

More and more often, tires are being recycled and formed into all sorts of new products. From park benches to carpets, recycled rubber is a durable and economical product. When you are faced with the decision what to do with your old ATV tires, look to your local recycling company to see if rubber is accepted. Although you may not be able to place your tires to the curb if you community is involved with curbside recycling, the recycling plant may be able to take the tires off your hands. Look to the phonebook or internet to find a recycling facility near you and make a quick visit or telephone call to see if your tires are able to be recycled.

Most tire stores that provide you with new tires for your ATV will be able to take your old ones. Before you make the change, be sure to ask the tire center what they do with old tires if you are concerned about the environmental impact unused rubber causes. Also, there may be a slight fee involved with properly disposing of your old tires, so know this amount upfront in order to prevent any surprises at the cash register. The state in which you live may have certain regulations or fees involving tire disposal, and this is often incorporated into your bill and is listed separately from the cost of the new tires or the labor to install the tires on your ATV.

If your old tires still have life in them, consider giving them to a friend or family member with an ATV. Keep in mind that old tires should only be used if they still have ample tread and are able to ensure the vehicle can be driven safely. Also, consider selling your old ATV tires so that you can use the profits to buy a new set. Look to your local newspaper and list a classified advertisement or turn to the internet with sites like Ebay or Craigslist to sell your tires. These are great resources and you may even find a new set of ATV tires listed at a more economical price than offered at your local tire store.

Are You An Atver?

Friday, June 23rd, 2006

There are many lines of 4 wheeler tires to choose from, such as the ITP ATV tire, ATV sand tire, Gator ATV tire, Maxxis ATV tire, Goodyear ATV tire, and many others.

Whether you are shopping for ATV mud tires, discount ATV tires, ATV paddle tire or an ATV tire and wheel kit, check the internet for the best deals. These suppliers are often large dealers, some with no storefronts, so they have low overhead costs which they pass on to consumers. These businesses ship tires and accessories all over the U.S.A. When comparing prices, be sure to compare the TOTAL DELIVERED PRICE. Many companies will ship any large order (often over $200.00) FREE. For smaller orders, shipping can add a $10.00 - $20.00 fee, depending on the weight of the item.

Before buying any expensive accessories, check consumer reviews to see how well the different brands perform, as there are consistent differences in quality and price. Bigfoot kits, wheels and tires are manufactured by several companies such as ITP, Kenda and Maxxis. Select the right tires for your predominant environment, as there are tires for mud, sand, racing and trails.

While there are many companies manufacturing ATVs and accessories, ATV enthusiast magazines consistently rave about ITP tires and wheels and how they improve the performance and appearance of these vehicles. machines. In numerous cases over the years, ITP has been given “best of” awards for their products. Likewise, several ATV magazine surveys have shown that ITP tires and wheels have become the first choice of readers. So far, ITP is by far the leader in consumer polls.

Riders not lucky enough to live next to a riding area must transport their ATV in a trailer or truck. It’s extremely difficult (and even dangerous), even with more than one person on hand, to lift an ATV onto a truck bed. Be sure to purchase a loading ramp along with the ATV.

Warn 424 Select is a front-end disconnect system that allows the ATV driver to manually disengage both front wheels for improved maneuverability, then re-engage 4-wheel drive for superior traction. The system was specifically designed for 4-wheel drive Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha ATVs.

Most off-road riders will eventually get stuck in the mud or need any help up a steep hill. For a serious ATV rider, a winch is a necessity. Even casual users will find they need one eventually. Pair it up with a snow plow, pallet mover or dump bucket to get the maximum use out of your ATV. ATVs can push snow, feed, gravel and many more tough jobs on farms and at businesses. The winch can be used to raise and lower the plow. Or leave the winch attached and use the Plow Actuator to raise and lower the blade. It is also possible to use the standard manual lift.

Bumpers and skid plates protect the ATV from damage due to rough terrain or racing. Many models and strengths are available.

For rough terrain that shakes loose both riders and luggage, consider a luggage carrier. These storage bags are made by many manufacturers such as ATV Logic, American Trail Ventures, Kolpin, and Tamarack. Tough ATV Cargo Boxes are made by Kolpin, Tamarack and Kimpex.

Make sure that all ATV riders are wearing helmets. These come in a wide range of prices and sizes, and it’s important to find one that feels comfortable so you won’t be tempted to take it off while riding. Helmets are vital safety gear for all riders, especially children. And don’t forget about other gear to cope with the outdoor environment, such as rain-repellent suits and eyewear.

Soft-top covers for ATVs function much the same way as tops on jeeps and 4-wheel drives. For long drives in rainy weather, it’s a useful accessory to have on hand.

If you use the ATV for hunting, consider hunting accessories such as gun and bow holders or gun grips.

For every ATV user, there are accessories to make each ride more enjoyable and safe. Check online stores for products tailored to your unique recreational needs.

All About ATVs

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

ATV’s, or All Terrain Vehicles are small open motor vehicles with large tires used as a means of transportation across rugged off-road terrain. These vehicles are ridden by a driver and controlled with motorcycle-style hand controls. The throttle is on the right hand grip, and the brakes are controlled by a handle on the left hand grip. These vehicles are a fun and exciting way to experience the wilderness, and can be a useful means of transportation in rural settings.

There are many different types of ATV’s from companies such as Honda, Polaris, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Arctic Cat. Each company has a variety of models and varying engine sizes for each model. The basic choice you will have to make when purchasing an ATV is whether you are going to use it for work or for recreation. Utility ATV’s are used for hunting, fishing and farming. They are predominantly used for navigating difficult terrain and covering long distances off-road. The second type of ATV are the sport models, which are used for recreation and racing.

Once you have decided on which ATV is right for you the next thing to purchase will be protective equipment. ATV’s are fast and exciting but they also can be potentially dangerous and it is always recommended that riders wear a helmet and protective clothing. Heavy-duty gloves and boots are a must and riders should also replace their sunglasses with goggles for eye protection. Most ATV accidents are caused by rider error and carelessness. Riders should always be aware of their surroundings and the speeds they are traveling at.

Riding ATV’s are a great way to travel over rough terrain, they can help farmers with tough jobs and can be an exciting way to experience the outdoors. Whether you are looking for a utility ATV or a sport ATV it is important to take a safety class before going out on your own.

The Best ATV Accessories

Monday, June 19th, 2006

The ATV has gained huge popularity because of its versatility. It is included in many different outdoor activities like racing, hunting and camping. This has made way for many customizable features that you can add to your ATV. Racing ATVs look very different from conventional ATVs that you may see in rural areas. They are usually customized with different wheels, shocks and exhaust systems. The wheels on a racing ATV are narrower to give it more speed and turning ability. The wheels are also upgraded to a lighter and stiffer aluminum alloy the reduce weight and handle impact from jumps. The shocks are one of the most important upgrades because there are many jumps on a typical course. The shocks need to give enough to absorb impact with minimal speed loss. They also must be stiff enough to maintain the vehicles integrity on tight corners. Loose shocks could result in a rollover if the turn is too tight. Many riders are constantly tweaking their shocks to find the perfect combination to maximize their speed and safety. The exhaust is simply made up of a more free flowing muffler and intake to move air through the engine much quicker. This altered exhaust results in more noise output, but it can significantly raise the torque of an ATV. ATVs for hunting and camping are very similar overall. They have wide tires for good off-road traction. Hunters will sometime use a stricter muffler, so that the ATV is not so loud. Both types of ATVs will have extra storage compartments and rails on the front and back to tie down their gear. A large capacity fuel tank is always a good option for extended trips. Extra gas cans are also a common on such ATVs. One of the best options to ensure that you do not get stuck in the wilderness is a front mounted winch. This is primarily for dragging the ATV out of deep mud or sand in case it gets stuck. The winch cable can be fastened around a nearby tree, and it will pull the vehicle toward the tree.

What is a kid ATV?

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

Kids like to ride the allterain vehicles just like adults do. The adult ones are a little too big for some children and are not suited for them to ride. Some of the bigger atvs are more powerful and are too large for children to control. That is why there is a kid atv for younger children to ride and have fun with.

The kid atvs are made to be smaller so that they will be suitable for young children. They will be able to ride their atvs and enjoy them without worrying about the size of the machine and being too large for them. The smaller ones have handlebars that are closer to the seat and the foot pedals are easier for them to reach. This will make the ride for any child is safer and more fun.

There are many stores that have different kid atvs to choose from. There are many styles and brands of these fun vehicles for them too choose from. Each child is different and the needs for the ATV may be different as well. It is important to make sure that the child is comfortable on the atv and that all of the features are accessible for the child while riding.

There are many colors and designs of the kid atvs that are out there on the market. For some kids, they want to have a certain color or model. If you cannot find the right one in the stores, you can shop online to find the ones that fit your budget as well as your needs. There are many shops online or you can check out the auction sites for the right ATV for you.

A kid ATV is going to have a smaller engine and horsepower as well. This is so that the ATV is not more powerful than what the child can handle. This is important for safety reasons. A child should have the right ATV that has adequate power for them. Children do no need to ride at fast speeds that are dangerous for them. It is possible for the child to have fun with their kid ATV and not ride at high rates of speed. This is very important for parents to check into when they are deciding on the right ATV for their child.

It is also important to for the child to learn the proper safety so that their ride will be a good one. All children should know the right safety procedures so that they will not be in danger while on their kid ATV. Anyone can have a lot of fun as long as they are using common sense and safety first.

ATVs of All Shapes and Sizes from Yamaha

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

Yamaha has pleased its customers in every aspect possible for years, which is why it is not a surprise that they have succeeded in giving ATV riders what they want. There are new models of Yamaha all terrain vehicles each year and 2007 is no exception. Yamaha has already released a few new 2007 ATV models in each of their categories, sport, utility and youth. ATV riders have been extremely pleased in the past with the features and designs produced by Yamaha, which is why consumers continue going back for more, keeping Yamaha ranked among the most popular and trusted ATV providers. Whether a person uses their ATV for working the land or tearing the trails up, and no matter how long they have been involved in the sport, Yamaha consumers are satisfied with the job that gets done.

Riders of all ages and all experience levels flock to Yamaha for their ATV needs because even just one of their stock ATVs can charge through virtually any terrain. The toughness of Yamaha ATVs combined with the high speed for sport riders and the strength for utility riders is the perfect mixture of characteristics for a trusted product. ATVers have reviewed all the models from Yamaha, dating back to the first released, and each new style generates talk about how strong and dependable their four-wheelers are.

To keep their customers pleased and coming back for more, Yamaha tweaks and changes previously successful models so that a new, advanced model can be released to please even more. Examples of this are the new Yamaha Raptor 660R for sport ATVers, and the Grizzly 660R, a utility ATV. These new models have the largest engines of any Yamaha ATVs. Both the Raptor and the Grizzly are established Yamaha ATVs, but the new models are enhanced advancements of the older models.

The 660 engines give sport riders an edge of speed off the line in a race and utility riders can tear through anything carrying a large load with an ATV engine that size. In addition to the constant upgrades Yamaha releases, they have models that are somewhat of a downgrade to create their youth ATVs. The only downgrades on the youth ATVs are engine and body size.

The same quality and dependability are expected from their youth ATVs. Yamaha has an ATV small enough for children as young as six to ride.

Their sport ATVs are a top choice among racers because of the innovative body designs and high torque engines. For working a ranch or farm, Yamahas utility ATVs are as tough as they get. The utility ATVs from Yamaha are not known for high speed, but other features, such as the four-wheel independent suspension, make these quads the best for a rough ride with a large load.

All of this is not to say Yamaha ATVs are perfect, in fact there are many upgrades and accessories you can add to improve them, but when it comes to the core purpose of an ATV, utility or sport, Yamaha quads can achieve that task, which is what matters most.

A kid ATV as a gift

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

There are many children these days that are riding around on their own kid ATV. They are all over the place riding around and having a good time. There is no reason why a child should not have good and safe time while riding on their ATV. There are many parents that are considering getting their child one of these adventures vehicles for a present.

A kid ATV will make a great gift for the child that likes to have an adventure. This is a great way for this child to get to be in the great outdoors as well as having a fun time. There are a few things that parents should remember before they decide to get their child one of these dangerous and expensive items.

The first thing a parent should do is considered if their child is ready for one of these mature gifts. They need to think if their child is ready for this kind of responsibility. If the child is too immature and too careless then it is not a good idea to get them a kid ATV as a gift. If the child is ready for one, the parents need to make sure that they are clear about the rules for the ATV and what they are allowed to do and what they are not allowed to do.

There are many sizes and brands of a kid ATV to choose from. The parent can find the ones that are appropriate for their child and their needs. Parents that are getting one of these as a gift should do a lot of research before they purchase one to make sure that they are getting the best ATV for their child. Many of the stores that are selling these vehicles are able to help parents make the best choice for their child.

You can even take the child with you to find the right kid ATV as a present. They will be so excited to pick out their own that it will not matter if it is a surprise or not. This way they will be able to get one that fits their body better. They will be able to make sure that they feel comfortable with the machine as well.

When it comes time to give the kid ATV to the child, it is important to teach the child how to use the machine first. This is going to be a must for safety and responsibility. Teaching them how to ride the atv and how to use the proper equipment and the do’s and don’ts of riding will make you and the child more comfortable about the kid atv.

Trekking & Searching for new ATV Trails

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

Throughout North America and many other parts of the world ATVs and dirt bike off road trail parks and facilities continue to grow. As the sport of ATV racing and recreational off road riding becomes more popular, the success of established trails encourages additional riding areas to be developed.

The growing number of enthusiastic ATV riders is not the only cause for a demand of more trails. All ATV riders, new and old, want more trails for the challenge. ATVers demand new trails because they strive to conquer anything they can.

Riding off road with ATVs has become a sport many dedicate themselves to, but there are just as many people who enjoy the sport on a sporadic basis.

Renting ATVs and riding the trails is not an uncommon tourist attraction in many areas of the United States. Because of this many people have experienced and enjoyed ATV riding at some of the trail parks around the nation. Some now dedicated ATV riders started out by taking a recreational off road drive at one of these tourist trail parks.

Perhaps some of the most extravagant ATV and dirt bike trails established are those in the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia. The Hatfield-McCoy Trails stretch for over 500 miles and growing. They have come to be known as “Trails Heaven.”

These ATV trails attract all types of rider and accommodations for the different crowds are abundant. In the areas surrounding “Trails Heaven” there are hotels, bed and breakfast inns, ATV rentals shops, ATV and dirt bike mechanical shops, guided tours and other activities to fill a weekend vacation. This area is the place to be for any of the ATV racing, riding and special events you are interested in. Bringing your own off road vehicle is allowed at “Trails Heaven,” but a permit is required for all riders, rental or other.

The Hatfield-McCoy Trails are also the host of several high scale ATV and dirt bike riding events throughout the year. These are the events where you can meet hundreds of fellow ATV enthusiasts. In 2005 there will be an ATV/dirt bike jamboree for riders to participate in. The Appalachian trails also coordinate a Dirt Days riding event. They will also be the host for the National ATV and dirt bike rally week in ‘05. Places like “Trails Heaven” are a great riding spot for ATVers of any skill level because they have the proper accommodations for all. There are many other similar ATV trails established, however, if you are a regular rider, you probably want to find your own, local trails and make the big trail parks a weekend event.

Whether you are new to the sport or just looking for some new trails to experience, there are several web sites that help you locate the right place. At trailsource.com you can choose a region anywhere in the world to search for a specific ATV riding area. ATVTrails.org does the same, but for United States trails only. With these search tools you can find a local riding spot, or plan to visit the large, high traffic trails for a weekend, such as at the Hatfield-McCoy Trails.

ATV Gear and Accessories - Tips and Tricks

So you’ve just purchased your all terrain vehicle and now need some ATV accessories. Since ATV’s have a reputation as being dangerous, thing to purchase will be protective equipment. Just like operating a motorcycle or bike, riding an ATV requires you use proper protective gear.So the very first thing should be to get a proper helmet and be sure to wear proper eye protection too. The next thing to think about is some protective clothing , so be sure to wear boots and gloves to protect your hands and feet while operating the ATV - it’s an absolute must for any rider. Another great accessory for your ATV could be a saddle bag which will allow you to carry all your cargo while you take your ATV on hunting trips or just to have some outdoor fun. Most off-road riders will eventually get stuck in the mud or need any help . For a serious ATV rider, a winch is a necessity. The winch cable can be fastened around a nearby tree, and it will pull the vehicle toward the tree. Racing ATVs look very different from conventional ATVs that you may see in rural areas. When it comes to tires, the most important attribute is the tread. Different tires have different types of tread that make the ATV appropriate for navigating different types of terrain. For those spending time in the mud, it is strongly recommended that you purchase mud tires. Mud tires also work well on different types of terrain , but due to the tire tread, the ride is not so smooth. On the other hand narrow tires tend to sink in mud, but may provide you more stability on hard packed ground.
